Friday night football (Oct. 2): Games to watch, 810 Varsity online games and KC area schedule

Where’s your favorite high school football team playing this week? Check out The Star’s Friday and Saturday schedule, as well as two Friday game previews and a list of Friday games that 810 Varsity will be broadcast online.

FRIDAY’S GAMES TO WATCH

Staley (4-0) at Mill Valley (5-1)

Through four games, Mill Valley has passed every test.

The Jaguars have defeated two Kansas teams that advanced to last season’s state playoffs, including a season-opening 38-20 victory over Class 5A state runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas.

Staley will feature the toughest defense Mill Valley has faced, allowing 14 or fewer points in its victories and just 17 in a loss to Fort Osage.

Mill Valley has averaged 36.8 points per game and only one of its games was decided by seven or fewer points.

Mill Valley’s Logan Koch will be a player to watch. He has scored four touchdowns in the last two weeks. Teammate Tristan Milne also has two rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown in the Jags’ last two games.

Kearney (5-1) at Platte County (5-1)

On their way to the Missouri Class 4 state semifinals last season, the Kearney Bulldogs set a reputation for having one of the best defenses in the state.

The offense has caught up in 2015.

Through five victories, Kearney is averaging 55.8 points per game — an astounding number based on a running game that accounts for 250 yards every Friday night. Marcus Harris has scored 12 rushing touchdowns.

Platte County had its offense clicking, too, but a season-ending injury to quarterback Justin Mitchell could certainly change that dynamic. Without Mitchell, Platte County lost its first game last week, 50-24 to Belton.
