913 area high school football: Week 9 review
Here is a review of Week 9 high school football action in the Sunflower League and Eastern Kansas League, as well as four other 913 area teams. Records in parentheses are overall and league marks.
SUNFLOWER LEAGUE
1. SM East (9-0, 6-0)
Last week: Defeated SM North 62-12
The Lancers finished an undefeated regular season with their ninth straight 40-plus point game.
2. Olathe North (9-0, 8-0)
Last week: Defeated Olathe Northwest 20-0
The Eagles capped their perfect regular season with a Sunflower League shutout. Cole Murphy scored two touchdowns.
3. Olathe South (6-2, 4-1)
Last week: Defeated Gardner Edgerton 49-22
The Falcons bounced back from its second loss of the season with a rout and enters state as the fifth seed in the East.
4. Lawrence Free State (6-3, 3-3)
Last week: Defeated Topeka 53-37
After a rocky start, the Firebirds ended the regular season with four consecutive victories.
5. Lawrence (5-4, 5-3)
Last week: Defeated Olathe East 66-28
The Chesty Lions bounced back from a shutout loss and are the No. 8 seed.
6. Olathe Northwest (5-4, 6-3)
Last week: Lost to Olathe North 20-0
Although they posted a winning record, the Ravens’ postseason dreams came to an end with a shutout.
7. Leavenworth (5-4, 1-4)
Last week: Defeated Lansing 63-0
Isaiah Ross had two receiving touchdowns and ran for another in a rout of neighboring Lansing.
8. SM West (5-4, 4-4)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley North 24-21
The Vikings scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win and qualify for state with a winning record.
9. SM South (2-7, 2-6)
Last week: Defeated SM Northwest 27-20
Matt Hollingsworth passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Raiders qualified for state with their third win.
10. Olathe East (3-6, 2-6)
Last week: Lost to Lawrence 66-28
The Hawks’ season ended with five consecutive losses and they failed to qualify for state.
11. SM Northwest (2-7, 2-5)
Last week: Lost to SM South 27-20
The Cougars’ fourth-quarter rally fell short and they finished the season with four consecutive losses.
12. SM North (2-7, 0-7)
Last week: Lost to SM East 62-12
The Indians only won two games, but they did it when it counted and qualified for the state tournament.
EASTERN KANSAS LEAGUE
1. Bishop Miege (9-0, 6-0)
Last week: Defeated Sumner Academy 51-12
The Stags scored 37 points in the first quarter and capped their undefeated season with another rout.
2. Blue Valley (8-1, 6-1)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley Northwest 20-12
The Tigers proved they can compete with Class 6A schools and faltered just once in the regular season.
3. St. Thomas Aquinas (6-3, 5-2)
Last week: Lost to Pittsburg 31-21
The Saints ended their season with a loss, but are headed to the Class 5A tournament in Randy Dreiling’s first year.
4. Blue Valley Northwest (5-4, 4-3)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley 20-12
The Huskies ended their season with a close loss to the Class 5A defending state champions.
5. Blue Valley West (5-4, 3-4)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley Southwest 56-24
Tyler Cox ran for 282 yards and five touchdowns in 26 carries and Nathan Wiles connected with Blaise Gammon twice.
6. Blue Valley Southwest (4-5, 2-5)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley West 56-24
The Timberwolves did not qualify for state, but ended their season with back-to-back victories.
7. Blue Valley North (2-7, 1-5)
Last week: Lost to SM West 24-21
The Mustangs may have only won two games, but the improvements were clear in Andy Sims’ first year.
8. Gardner Edgerton (0-9, 0-7)
Last week: Lost to Olathe South 49-22
The Trailblazers were blown out in their final game of the year and were winless on the season.
OTHER 913 AREA TEAMS
1. St. James Academy (6-3, IND)
Last week: Lost to Bonner Springs 13-0
The Thunder’s season and postseason hopes ended in disappointing fashion with a shutout loss in district play.
2. Mill Valley (5-4, 2-0)
Last week: Defeated Turner 59-28
The Jaguars had a tough regular season, but their open schedule should help in the Class 5A tournament.
3. Spring Hill (4-5, 2-3)
Last week: Defeated Louisburg 29-6
Charles Elam and Ryker Johnson each scored two touchdowns as the Broncos picked up a second straight victory.
4. De Soto (2-6, 1-4)
Last week: Lost to Ottawa 27-22
De Soto passed the 20-point mark for the first time in three games, but dropped its fourth straight.
