Kansas City area high school football schedule for Oct. 31-Nov. 1

Here are two games in the spotlight on Friday’s Kansas City area high school football schedule:

SMITHVILLE (8-2) at PLATTE COUNTY (9-1)

These two teams played to an instant classic in the 2013 playoffs, with Smithville holding on for a 40-32 first-round victory. One year later, the postseason rematch could be just as thrilling.

Smithville and Platte County are two of the most improved teams in Missouri Class 4. Platte County won only four games last season, but it’s already won nine this fall — in surprisingly easy fashion, too. Its average margin of victory is 24 points.

Both teams can move the ball, but they utilize entirely different methods. Platte County uses the spread offense, quarterbacked by Justin Mitchell. Smithville prefers to overpower a defense with its running game. Charlie Nihart has run for 1,678 yards and 16 touchdowns.

ST. JAMES ACADEMY (6-2) at BONNER SPRINGS (6-2)

Each of these teams comes in with only two losses. More importantly, they have identical 1-1 records in district play. That means a Kansas Class 5A state tournament berth is on the line, since Mill Valley already wrapped up one spot.

St. James Academy, last week, bounced back from a three-point loss to Mill Valley with a double-digit victory against Turner in their final home game. Bonner Springs, meanwhile, is coming off a crushing 42-0 loss that snapped a six-game winning streak.
