Kansas basketball all-stars top Missouri in Greater Kansas City All-Star Challenge

As Lee’s Summit West senior Monte Harrison walked onto the floor — ready to show off his latest arsenal of dunks — the crowd at Shawnee Mission South rose to its collective feet.

A few fans moved toward the baseline, hoping for a better view. Others pulled out their cell phones and began recording video.

Harrison didn’t disappoint.

He threw down four jaw-dropping dunks — once hurdling a teammate and once going between his legs for a slam — to win the dunk contest Friday at the Greater Kansas City All-Star Challenge. Blue Valley Northwest forward David Salach took second in the competition.

“I could tell the crowd was getting hyped during warmups,” Harrison said. “I knew I had to come out and perform and give them something to see.”

Harrison took the dunk contest. Then Kansas took the game.

The Kansas All-Stars rolled to a 114-90 victory over Missouri in the boys game.

It really wasn’t even that close.

Kansas built a 15-point lead by halftime and doubled that advantage midway through the second half in a game that won’t be remembered for its defensive intensity.

Seven players were in double figures for Kansas, led by 20 from Olathe East forward Ezra Talbert. Lansing guard Joe Schneider and Blue Valley North forward Jawan Emery each had 14. Emery punctuated his night with three dunks, including a pair of put-back slams.

“It was really big for us. We wanted to prove a point because there’s always talk about who’s better — Kansas or Missouri,” said Schneider, who led Lansing to an undefeated season this year. “We wanted to come out here and represent Kansas well, so that’s what we did.”

Grandview senior Tyrone Taylor scored 23 in a losing effort for Missouri, which also got 10 points each from Central guard Ramar Brown and West Platte forward Adam Roe.

Kearney senior Meagan Paul’s ability to shoot from the perimeter has never really been a secret, but apparently word travels slowly across the state line.

Paul made five three-pointers and scored 17 points, lifting Missouri to a 110-79 victory over Kansas in the girls contest.

“I don’t know if they knew I was a shooter or not, because they kind of left me open in the beginning,” Paul said. “If you give me that space, I’m going to shoot it.”

Paul broke the Kearney school record for career three-pointers this season. The Kansas All-Stars didn’t get the memo.

She wasn’t the only one firing from deep.

Missouri made 12 three-pointers, including eight in the second half, when the team scored 67 points. Blue Springs South guard Remy Davenport scored all nine of her points from behind the three-point line, and Lee’s Summit North forward Imani Johnson capped the night by banking in a three-pointer at the buzzer.

“I think we all thought it was our last real high school game, so we wanted to go out with a bang,” Paul said. “We wanted to score 100 — that was our goal. Scoring 110, that was the icing on top.”

Olathe South guard Bailey Rinehart led Kansas with 15 points.

All 22 players who entered the game scored.
