Clayton Custer is The Star’s All-Metro boys basketball player of year

A conversation with Blue Valley Northwest senior Clayton Custer isn’t necessarily a window into his impressive four-year basketball career.

Custer, an Iowa State signee, has every right to be cocky or self-righteous after rewriting the Huskies’ record books. Yet, he simply stands there with a smile, funneling praise to his teammates moments after winning a second straight Kansas Class 6A state championship.

“He is very humble and never does anything to draw attention to himself. He lets his actions speak for themselves,” Huskies coach Ed Fritz said. “He’s solid academically, solid in the community. A lot of the young kids look up to him as a role model, and he has always been serious about that.”

Custer, The Star’s All-Metro basketball player of the year, entered the season already holding school records for points, assists and steals. During the season, he averaged 19.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game. His school records stand at 1,795 points, 368 assists and 208 steals in 100 varsity games.

“He wasn’t just a great player on an average team, he was a good player on a really good team and had some good players with him,” Fritz said. “I think that made it a lot more special.”

Custer and the other seniors leave Blue Valley Northwest with four consecutive state championship game appearances, two titles and a 94-6 overall record, including a 23-2 mark this season.
