913 area high school football: Week 8 review

Here is a review of Week 7 high school football action in the Sunflower League and Eastern Kansas League, as well as four other 913 area teams. Records in parentheses are overall and league marks.

SUNFLOWER LEAGUE

1. SM East (8-0, 5-0)

Last week: Defeated Wyandotte 56-12

The Lancers scored 42 first-quarter points, which included four touchdown passes by Gunnar Englund. He went five-for-eight with 139 passing yards.

2. Olathe North (8-0, 7-0)

Last week: Defeated Lawrence 27-0

Venus Triplett scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and Isaiah Simmons added another in the Eagles’ victory.

3. Olathe South (6-2, 4-1)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley 49-0

The Falcons lost for just the second time this season, but did so in dramatic fashion. All seven touchdowns were given up on the ground.

4. Olathe Northwest (5-3, 5-2)

Last week: Defeated Olathe East 34-7

The Ravens bounced back from a three-point loss to Lawrence to even up their district record at 1-1.

5. Lawrence (4-4, 4-3)

Last week: Lost to Olathe North 27-0

The Chesty Lions were shutout for the first time this season. They have lost two of their last three games.

6. Lawrence Free State (5-3, 3-3)

Last week: Defeated Manhattan 35-14

The Firebirds won their third consecutive game. They have held opponents to 14 points or fewer in each of those games.

7. Leavenworth (4-4, 1-4)

Last week: Defeated Washington 59-16

The Pioneers have outscored opponents 88-24 to stay undefeated after their first two district games.

8. SM West (4-4, 4-4)

Last week: Defeated SM South 27-23

The defense and special teams played a big part in the victory, with Asher Goldston’s interception return and Isaiah Macklin’s kick return.

9. Olathe East (3-5, 2-5)

Last week: Lost to Olathe Northwest 34-7

Hawks have lost their last four games and have been held to seven points or fewer in each of those games.

10. SM South (2-6, 1-6)

Last week: Lost to SM West 27-23

The Raiders had their second highest scoring game of the season, but still lost to the Vikings. They have lost two straight games.

11. SM Northwest (2-6, 2-4)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley North 45-35

Sam Sullivan ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, but the Cougars lost their third consecutive game.

12. SM North (2-6, 0-6)

Last week: Defeated Harmon 41-6

The Indians picked up their second consecutive victory after losing 25 straight games. They’ve outscored opponents 99-19 in two district games.

EASTERN KANSAS LEAGUE

1. Bishop Miege (8-0, 6-0)

Last week: Defeated Louisburg 41-14

Dawson Downing ran for three touchdowns and Ryan Willis passed for three more, as the Stags rolled another district opponent.

2. Blue Valley (7-1, 5-1)

Last week: Defeated Olathe South 49-0

William Evans ran for 136 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries in the Tigers’ biggest victory of the season.

3. St. Thomas Aquinas (6-2, 5-2)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley West 52-28

James Cosentino ran for four first-half touchdowns and finished with five overall in the victory. His longest was an 81-yard run.

4. Blue Valley Northwest (5-3, 4-2)

Last week: Defeated Gardner Edgerton 45-17

The Huskies bounced back from a loss in the first week of districts and have now won four of their last five games.

5. Blue Valley West (4-4, 2-4)

Last week: Lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 52-28

Nathan Wiles completed 15 of 31 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns, but the Jaguars could not slow down Aquinas’ James Cosentino.

6. Blue Valley Southwest (4-4, 2-4)

Last week: Defeated Pittsburg 34-14

Led by Collin Gallery, who threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns, the Timberwolves snapped a four-game losing streak.

7. Blue Valley North (2-6, 1-5)

Last week: Defeated SM Northwest 45-35

Joey Dolan completed 32 of 41 pass attempts for 428 yards and three touchdowns in the Mustangs’ second victory of the season.

8. Gardner Edgerton (0-8, 0-7)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley Northwest 45-17

The Trailblazers have been held to 20 or fewer points in every game this season. That includes two early shutouts.

OTHER 913 AREA TEAMS

1. St. James Academy (6-2, IND)

Last week: Defeated Turner 51-28

Trey Keith passed for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Zak Hensley caught one touchdown pass from Keith and rushed for two more.

2. Mill Valley (4-4, 2-0)

Last week: Defeated Bonner Springs 42-0

Logan Koch passed for 200 yards and a touchdown, and then ran for another. Christian Jegan added two more rushing touchdowns.

3. De Soto (3-5, 1-4)

Last week: Lost to Eudora 28-14

De Soto has been held to 20 or fewer points in each of its last three games and lost all three of them.

4. Spring Hill (3-5, 2-3)

Last week: Defeated Sumner Academy 42-12

Brad Smith ran for four touchdowns and Charles Elam added two more on the ground, as the Broncos bounced back from a loss to Miege.
