High school football: By the numbers

4 — Four Sunflower League teams have won Kansas Class 6A state titles in the last six years. SM East enters this season as the defending state champion. Other league state champs were Shawnee Mission West in 2012, Olathe South in 2011 and Olathe North in 2009.

5 — State championships for Staley football coach Fred Bouchard, who is coaching his final season. Bouchard has been roaming the sidelines for three decades. He won four state championships while at Harrisonville and one after moving to Staley.

90 — A new rule change means Kansas high school football teams will be limited to 90 minutes of full-contact practice per week during the regular season. The Kansas State High School Activities Association also introduced a tapering method to start the season, which delays full-contact practice until Friday. Kansas football teams began practicing on Monday.

803 — Miles the Rockhurst Hawklets will travel for their regular season games. The Hawklets have only three home games on the schedule, and they will make six road trips, beginning with Saturday’s trip to Faurot Field to face Rock Bridge on the University of Missouri campus. Three games are being played in an event billed as “Mayhem at the Zou” that pits three Columbia-area high school football teams against opponents. Class 5 state champion Battle plays Jackson at 11 a.m., followed by Hickman vs. Class 6 state champion Christian Brothers College at 3 p.m. In the event’s final game at 7 p.m., Class 6 runner-up Rockhurst and longtime coach Tony Severino will face Rock Bridge.
