The Shawnee Mission South girls high school basketball team captured its second state championship in three years on Saturday in Wichita.

The Raiders (24-3) of SM South beat another Kansas City-area team, Blue Valley Northwest, 57-45 for the Kansas Class 6A title at Koch Arena. Laila Johnson-Berndt led Shawnee Mission South with 19 points.

That game was just one of many with state championships on the line Saturday around the Sunflower State.

The Class 6A boys championship game saw Olathe North defeat Shawnee Mission South 67-50 at Koch Arena. Other state finals are being played in Hutchinson, Emporia and Dodge City.

In the boys 5A state-title contest at Koch Arena, No. 2 seed Bonner Springs held off top-seeded Kapaun Mt. Carmel 53-50 for the championship.

The Braves also ended the Crusaders’ 44-game win streak. Kapaun Mt. Carmel was bidding for a third straight state title.

St. James beat Hays in a 49-48 thriller for the girls 5A championship later Saturday.
