It was another big night of games across the Kansas City metro on Friday.

Here are some highlights from Week 2 of the Missouri high school football schedule.

No. 3 Liberty 38, No. 13 Liberty North 22

After years of losing to their rival, now it’s the Blue Jays who hold a winning streak against Liberty North.

Liberty, ranked No. 3 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, won its third straight over the No. 13 Eagles on Friday. The Eagles held a six-game win streak until LHS ended the run last season.

Liberty (2-0) jumped out early on a Connor Hatfield touchdown pass to junior Masen Bindel just 2 minutes and 6 seconds in. Then, with 4:12 left in the first quarter, senior tailback Colt Nolin pushed the margin to 14-0.

Liberty North (0-2) scored on Isaac Hamilton’s 11-yard pass to Eli Goucher. But Nolin capped another scoring drive with a 3-yard TD plunge to make it 21-6.

The Eagles pulled to 21-9 before halftime, but after intermission, Liberty rattled off three straight scores. The barrage included TD runs by Hatfield (11 yards) and Andrew Olson (10 yards).

“It’s always great for the kids and school to win over your rival,” Liberty coach Chad Frigon said. “And we had a great night offensively, but our defense really did a great job for three quarters as well.”

Hatfield’s 97 rushing yards, Nolin’s 70 yards and Olson’s 63 helped Liberty to a 245-yard night on the ground.

Liberty will travel to Raytown South (0-2) next Friday, while Liberty North takes on Lee’s Summit West (1-1).

No. 16 Blue Springs 28, Lee’s Summit 7

Blue Springs’ playmakers showed out on both sides of the ball.

Ranked No. 16 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, the Wildcats got two interceptions followed promptly by touchdown receptions at Peve Stadium. And that made the difference.

Senior running back Dontay Ulberg capped a first-quarter drive with a 38-yard rushing touchdown for a 7-0 lead with 8:51 left in the period. Then junior safety Zay Hite picked off a pass to set up the Wildcats at the LSHS 45.

Shortly after that, Hite was on the receiving end of a 4-yard touchdown catch at the 6:34 mark for a 14-0 margin. Lee’s Summit, playing short-handed with a bevy of injuries, rallied to make it 14-7 before halftime on Dayton Masters’ TD run.

Blue Springs junior safety Corey Mayfield then stepped up with an interception and TD catch of his own. Blue Springs added another TD, on a pass from junior quarterback Wyatt Erickson to senior receiver Devin Staley.

Staley finished with a game-high 112 yards and a fumble recovery on defense. Ulberg had 60 rushing yards.

Blue Springs will travel to Raymore-Peculiar (0-2) next Friday, while Lee’s Summit plays host to No. 4 Blue Springs South (2-0).

North Kansas City 69, Park Hill 51

No, its not basketball season in September.

But in two games this season, North Kansas City has scored a combined 125 points — and 69 of them came in a 69-51 scoring-fest on Friday night at Park Hill.

“We tell everybody there’s a 24-hour rule,” North Kansas City coach Dan Joiner said. “We have 24 hours to celebrate this, and as they say, ‘The best win is the next win.’”

North Kansas City (2-0) built a 14-3 lead in the first quarter of this one, but Park Hill hung around.

A back-and-forth second quarter turned the way of the Hornets on a fourth-down rushing touchdown by junior Kobe Rhymes and another TD run by sophomore William Bazzle as time expired.

The Hornets led 34-17 at the break. By the 3:30 mark of the third quarter, however, Park Hill had trimmed that lead to 11 on a scoring pass from Zane Thomas to Dante Dixon.

The teams traded scores in the final 2:14 for a 48-37 North Kansas City advantage heading to the fourth. The Hornets finished the job by scoring two more touchdowns.

“This was a great victory for the Hornets tonight,” Joiner said.

After two road games to start the season, the Hornets will welcome Excelsior Springs to Northtown next week. Park Hill (1-1) will look to rebound at Staley (1-1).
