Starring at Kansas and hitting one of the biggest shots as the Jayhawks rolled to a national championship in 2008, Sherron Collins has seen, and certainly created, a lot of highlights in his lifetime.

Now the head boys basketball coach at Oak Park High School, Collins, 38, took part in another momentous occasion on Thursday afternoon in Columbia, leading the Northmen to the program’s first state championship at Mizzou Arena.

Oak Park defeated Chaminade College Prep 68-60 in the MSHSAA Class 6 title game. The Northmen (31-1) reached the finale with a 61-50 win against Nixa in Wednesday’s semifinals.

After Thursday’s historic win, Collins understandably became a little emotional. You can see his reaction on the court, during the trophy presentation, here.

Collins was hired at Oak Park High in April 2023. Before that, he coached Lawrence Free State to an 11-10 record in his lone season as head coach at the school in Lawrence, Kansas.

He is a 2006 graduate of Crane High in Chicago. He graduated from KU with a Liberal Arts degree in 2010.
