Staley girls, Mill Valley boys among KC metro tournament champions crowned Friday night
It was a busy Friday night of high school basketball action across the metro, with tournament champions being crowned in both boys and girls hoops.
Below are recaps and scores from area high school tournaments on Friday night...
KA-MO Tournament championship (girls)
Staley 65, Blue Valley North 44
A heralded matchup of two of the top-3 teams in the Metro turned out to be a runaway win for Staley.
The Falcons, 15-1 overall and ranked No. 3 in Missouri Class 6, won their second straight KA-MO title 65-44 over Blue Valley North, the No. 1 team in Kansas Class 6A.
The game was a rematch of last year’s title game, which Staley also won.
Ava Miles paced the Falcons with a team-high 20 points, while Brielle Mays (15) and Londyn Parker (13) also netted double digits. Staley opened the game with a 20-5 burst in the first quarter and didn’t look back.
“We came together and worked hard,” Parker said. “We shut down their big players. I love to play with these girls — it’s a lot of fun “
Jaliya Davis scored a game-high 21 points for the Mustangs, now 8-3.
Spring Hill Invitational championship (boys)
Mill Valley 62, Olathe South 57
Nic Anderson tried to change the script, but the ending remained the same for Mill Valley and Olathe South.
The Jaguars won the Spring Hill Invitational 62-57 in the championship game on Friday night. Mill Valley, now 9-2 overall, won its fifth straight game behind 17 points from Carter Kaifes and 13 from Reece Riedel.
The Falcons tried to avenge a 78-62 loss to Mill Valley just two weeks ago. Anderson, O-South’s standout senior guard, netted a game-high 32 points, including 19-of-20 from the free throw line. The effort kept the Falcons within 23-21 at halftime.
But the Jaguars stretched the margin to an arm’s distance in the third quarter for a 45-36 lead. JaKhai Carter drained two 3s and scored eight of his 11 points in the stanza.
Anderson scorched the nets for 16 in the final period, but Olathe South fell shy to drop to 8-4 for the year.
North Kansas City Invitational semifinals (boys)
North Kansas City 67, Truman 59 (OT)
North Kansas City waited until the end but topped Truman in overtime to advance to the NKC Invitational championship.
The Hornets (9-4) trailed nearly the entire game before rallying for a 53-53 tie at the end of regulation.
From there, North Kansas City hit 10 free throws in the extra period for a 67-59 victory.
Admir Jusic helped the late charge, scoring all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Jake Willmann paced the Hornets with 14 points, while Kordell Williams added 13.
Dallas Winda netted a game-high 23 points for Truman (8-6 overall), while Doral Thompson scored 14.
Rockhurst 63, Lee’s Summit North 53
To say Rockhurst has Lee’s Summit North’s number is a moot point.
The Hawklets coasted past the Broncos 63-53 on Friday night to advance to the North Kansas City Invitational title game.
Three of North’s five losses this year have come to Rockhurst (14-2) — twice in tournaments. The prior matchups came in mid-December at the Blue Valley tourney (56-40) and three days after (73-48).
Callen Eskew led the Hawklets with 15 points, while Cohen Robinson added 11.
Will Ray paced the Broncos (9-5) with 16 points.
