Missouri football playoffs: Kearney, Platte County roll while Lee’s Summit North exits
Here’s a look at highlights from a couple of big Missouri-side high school football games around the Kansas City metro on Friday night.
The Missouri playoffs are underway, with winners advancing.
Nixa 21, Lee’s Summit North 20
Just 11 seconds: That was enough to put an end to Lee’s Summit North’s undefeated season ... and, with it, the Broncos’ quest for a return to the Class 6 state championship game.
Adam McKnight, the quarterback for Nixa (12-0), found senior wideout Wyatt Vincent for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 10.4 seconds left to seal the outcome of this Class 6 state quarterfinal at Lee’s Summit North.
The Broncos, ranked No. 1 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, ended their season 11-1, one win short of the title game they reached in 2022.
The Eagles led Lee’s Summit North 14-7 in the first half, but Quade Chatmon darted for a 27-yard TD and senior kicker Noah Kent connected on a 35-yard field goal. With that rally, at halftime it was 17-14 Broncos.
Kent hit a 28-yard field in the third period to extend the hosts’ lead to 20-14, but Lee’s Summit North wouldn’t score again.
With its game-winning drive, Nixa advanced to the semifinals.
Kearney 49, Warrensburg 14
The defending Missouri Class 4 state champions continue to look the part in this year’s playoffs.
Grant Noland, Corbin Emmons and Carter Temple each scored two touchdowns on the ground as Kearney pulled away from Warrensburg Friday.
Kearney (12-0) continues its title defense next Saturday in the state semifinals, playing host to the winner of a game between Lutheran North and Parkway North.
Tristan Williams paced the Bulldogs Friday with 167 rushing yards and a TD. Emmons ran for 96 yards and two TDs, while Temple added 62 yards on the ground.
Platte County 35, Webb City 0
Platte County kept its undefeated season rolling by shutting out a recent postseason rival on Friday night.
The Pirates (12-0) routed host Webb City to advance to the Missouri Class 5 semifinals. Junior quarterback Rocco Marriott accounted for three touchdowns and junior running back Adam Gisler ran for two more.
The matchup was fitting for Platte County, as the last two times the Pirates reached the semifinals or beyond, Webb City was involved. Platte County beat Webb City in the Class 5 semis in 2020, lost in the Class 4 title game in 2019 and fell to Webb City in the Class 4 semis in 2017.
Marriott started Friday evening’s scoring parade with a 19-yard touchdown run. Another Marriott keeper, this time for a 3-yard TD, pushed the lead to 14-0 with 8:59 remaining in the first half.
Then Marriott connected with Ty Christopher for a long pass, setting up Gisler’s 28-yard scoring run. It was 21-0 at halftime, and Gisler helped the Pirates pour it on in the third quarter with a 33-yard TD.
Platte County will take on MICDS, led by longtime Harrisonville and Staley coach Fred Bouchard, next Saturday, Nov. 30, in St. Louis.
