913 area high school football: Week 6 review
Here is a review of Week 6 high school football action in the Sunflower League and Eastern Kansas League, as well as four other 913 area teams. Records in parentheses are overall and league marks.
SUNFLOWER LEAGUE
1. SM East (6-0, 5-0)
Last week: Defeated Leavenworth 41-17
The Lancers scored four consecutive touchdowns to start the game and continued their streak of 40-point games for the sixth straight week.
2. Olathe North (6-0, 5-0)
Last week: Defeated SM North 41-14
Venus Triplett ran for two touchdowns and caught another from Cole Murphy. Vinnie Shabazz added two more, including a 21-yard interception return.
3. Olathe South (5-1, 4-1)
Last week: Defeated Lawrence 29-21
Olathe South enters district play on a three-game winning streak. The last setback was a one-point loss to Olathe North.
4. Olathe Northwest (4-2, 4-1)
Last week: Defeated SM Northwest 31-0
The Ravens won their second consecutive game with a pair of rushing touchdowns from Dominique Bruce.
5. Olathe East (3-3, 2-3)
Last week: Lost to SM West 18-7
The Hawks have scored just seven points in each of their last two games and lost both. Chase Miller rushed for a one-yard touchdown.
6. Lawrence (3-3, 3-2)
Last week: Lst to Olathe South 29-21
The Chesty Lions scored 21 unanswered points in the second half,but their rally fell short and they dropped to .500 on the season.
7. Lawrence Free State (3-3, 3-3)
Last week: Dfeated SM South 21-6
Bryce Torneden rushed for two touchdowns and connected with Tye Carter for another as the Firebirds bounced back from two straight losses.
8. Leavenworth (2-4, 1-4)
Last week: Lost to SM East 41-17
The offensive struggled and gave up four sacks to Kyle Ball for a loss of 36 yards. SM East also scored on a fumble recovery.
9. SM Northwest (2-4, 2-3)
Last week: Lost to Olathe Northwest 31-0
The Cougars were shut out for the second time this season and gave up three rushing touchdowns to the Ravens.
10. SM West (2-4, 2-4)
Last week: Defeated Olathe East 18-7
Adam Rellihan ran for two touchdowns and Tyler Thaier added a 30-yard field goal as the Vikings picked up their second victory.
11. SM South (1-5, 1-5)
Last week: Lost to Lawrence Free State 21-6
The Raiders gave up 21 unanswered points before Dalton Lewallen ran in a three-yard touchdown.
12. SM North (0-6, 0-6)
Last week: Lost to Olathe North 41-14
The Indians head into district play still looking for their first victory. Will Schneider connected with Nick Perez for both of the team’s touchdowns.
EASTERN KANSAS LEAGUE
1. Bishop Miege (6-0, 6-0)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley Southwest 53-14
The Stags completed their undefeated run through the Eastern Kansas League. They have outscored opponents 247-98 in six games.
2. Blue Valley (5-1, 4-1)
Last week: Defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 21-14
The Tigers, who won the Kansas Class 5A state title last year, carry a three-game winning streak into 6A district play.
3. St. Thomas Aquinas (4-2, 3-2)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley 21-14
The Saints were held below 20 points for the first time this season. James Cosentino rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.
4. Blue Valley Northwest (4-2, 3-2)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley West 20-7
After a rocky start, the Huskies have some momentum going into district play with four consecutive victories.
5. 4. Blue Valley West (3-3, 2-3)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley Northwest 20-7
The Jaguars have been held to just seven points in each of their last two games and have lost both games.
6. Blue Valley Southwest (3-3, 2-3)
Last week: Lost to Bishop Miege 53-14
The Timberwolves have dropped three consecutive games and scored 14 points or fewer in each of them after starting 3-0.
7. Blue Valley North (1-5, 1-5)
Last week: Defeated Gardner Edgerton 31-15
The Mustangs picked up their first victory in two seasons with three passing touchdowns from Joey Dolan. He also ran for one.
8. Gardner Edgerton (0-6, 0-5)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley North 31-15
Colton Mullin ran for one touchdown and connected with Tanner Hughes for another, but the Trailblazers are still winless.
OTHER TEAMS
1. St. James Academy (5-1, IND)
Last week: Defeated Coffeyville 27-8
Trey Keith passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Thunder picked up their second consecutive victory.
2. De Soto (3-3, 1-2)
Last week: Defeated Louisburg 13-12
After losing by one point to Spring Hill two weeks ago, De Soto came up with a one-point victory to even its record.
3. Spring Hill (2-4, 2-3)
Last week: Lost to Eudora 32-14
Spring Hill scored the first two touchdowns of the game with a three-yard run and 44-yard pass by Ryker Johnson.
4. Mill Valley (2-4, 1-0)
Last week: Defeated Lansing 57-7
The Jaguars, who have experimented with a more open schedule this season, won their first Kaw Valley League game in a rout.
