Friday night lights: Kansas high school football highlights from around the KC metro
Bishop Miege found itself down two scores to a rival for the second straight week.
But this time the Stags’ comeback prevailed.
Bishop Miege, No. 7 in the 810 Varsity Top 25 high school football rankings, rallied from a 14-0 deficit against Blue Valley for a 28-21 win at Dixon Doll Stadium on Friday night.
The Stags (4-1) had sustained a 21-14 loss last week at Rockhurst.
“Our guys never quit, and this win will go a long way for us this season,” Bishop Miege coach Jon Holmes said. “But we don’t have long to think about it.”
Blue Valley (2-3) built a 14-0 lead by halftime, starting with a 14-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Chris Aiello to Jackson Hopper early in the second quarter. Following a Miege fumble, Aiello connected with senior running back John Price for a second touchdown.
The Stags emerged from halftime with big defensive plays, the first an interception that led to a two-yard David Garcia TD. On the following possession, Miege came up with a strip-sack and return for a defensive touchdown by Grant Kellerman.
With the game now knotted at 14-all, the Miege offense got on track. Andre Randle scored the go-ahead touchdown midway through the third, then quarterback Marco Rodriguez led off the final period with an 18-yard scoring strike to Teryn Jackson.
Martell Buchanan capped the scoring with a late touchdown for Blue Valley, which faces Blue Valley North (0-5) next Friday. Bishop Miege (4-1) will play at rival St. Thomas Aquinas (4-1).
Gardner Edgerton 21, Olathe North 14
It’s quite possible that the only stretch that could top the last two weeks for Gardner Edgerton is a state-title run.
A week after blasting Class 5A No. 1 Mill Valley, the Trailblazers beat Olathe North 21-14 in a showdown of No. 1 vs No. 2 in Kansas Class 6A.
Gardner Edgerton, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, beat Mill Valley 49-10 last week in Shawnee. Picking up where they left off with five TDs of 40-plus yards against the Jaguars, the Blazers opened the scoring in this one with a 74-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Bravin Powell to Colton Hawkinson with 42 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
Olathe North botched a punt at its own end zone and the Blazers’ Isaiah Williams recovered for a 14-0 Gardner Edgerton lead.
The Eagles (4-1) fought back on an Aiden Bruce 37-yard touchdown run with 5:23 left until halftime. GE then drove to the Olathe North 2, but fumbled. Jeremiah Rhodes scooped up the ball and went 98 yards to tie the game.
But Gardner Edgerton didn’t repeat its mistake, capping a drive in the third quarter with a Powell keeper from four yards out. That made it 21-14 with 2:41 left.
Olathe North will play host to Shawnee Mission West (0-5) next week, while Gardner Edgerton travels to Lawrence (4-1).
Blue Valley Northwest 27, Blue Valley West 14
Nate Livingston made quite the return for Blue Valley Northwest.
The Huskies quarterback threw for 194 yards and three touchdown passes to boost Northwest to a 27-14 win at Blue Valley West.
Blue Valley Northwest, No. 16 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, sustained a 34-22 loss last week to No. 1 Lee’s Summit North with Livingston out with an injury. But the senior was back Friday and put the Huskies up 7-0 with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ayden McGibboney at the end of the first quarter.
Livingston then connected with star tight end Gavin Hoffman in the second quarter for a 34-yard touchdown and 13-0 lead. A Lovie Pulliam rushing touchdown made it 20-0 by halftime.
The Jaguars found life after intermission when quarterback Tate Nagy passed to running back Sage Huffman. Huffman, a senior, broke loose for a 75-yard TD that made it 20-7 with 1:30 to go in the third quarter.
But Livingston and Hoffman hooked up again, this time for a 59-yard touchdown that sealed the game.
Huffman, who came in averaging 145 rushing yards per game, was limited to 27 yards on the ground Friday.
Blue Valley Northwest (3-2) will face Blue Valley Southwest (4-1) next week while the Jaguars (3-2) play St. James Academy (1-4).
