Senior quarterback Mac Armstrong threw for three touchdowns as Bishop Miege laid claim to the Kansas Class 4A football championship on Saturday afternoon at Hummer Park in Topeka.

The Stags beat previously undefeated Wamego 35-14.

While the Stags’ defense was effective in blunting a potent Wamego offense, Armstrong made sure the Stags’ offense clicked all but seamlessly for Miege (11-2).

The Stags led Wamego (12-1) by a 21-14 score at halftime.

Armstrong hit Isaiah Coppage for a 19-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 at the 10:20 mark of the second quarter.

Wamego quarterback Hayden Oviatt, who has committed to playing college football at Army, scored on a 42-yard run to knot it up at 7, but David Garcia’s short TD run for the Stags made it 14-7.

Armstrong then threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Daegen Jensen to put the Stags up 21-7, but Wamego answered again with a touchdown of its own: Colin Donahue, who made the switch from receiver to quarterback this season, found Hagan Johnson with a 10-yard TD pass.

Miege had a chance to score a fourth TD before intermission, but Armstrong’s pass into the end zone was picked off by the Red Raiders.

No matter for the Stags, who scored two touchdowns in the second half — one on a 27-yard run by Garcia, a junior, and the other on Armstrong’s third TD of the afternoon, a 93-yard hookup with sophomore Teryn Jackson.
