Lancers capture Sunflower League title

The Shawnee Mission East girls golf team cemented its Sunflower League title with a victory on Wednesday at the Olathe East Invitational at St. Andrews Golf Club.

Jessica Parker and Teagan Noblit led the way for SM East, while Haley Bell placed fourth and Riley Ricket finished 10th.

The Lancers won the three tournaments which comprised the Sunflower League tournament by 122 strokes. Olathe Northwest finished second.

Parker won the individual title and Lawrence Free State’s Emily Bermel placed second, followed by Noblit in third and Bell in fourth. SM South’s Rachel Larberg was fifth, followed by Olathe Northwest’s Chloe Kraus, SM Northwest’s Abby Radmanesh, SM East’s Marti Fromm, SM South’s Marti Collantes and Olathe South’s Claire Beeler.

Hawks take aim on stretch run

The Olathe East boys soccer team appears to be in a good position as it eyes the last two weeks of the season.

However, Hawks coach Terry Hair is cautious about getting too confident, given last year’s undefeated regular season run and subsequent loss in the Kansas Class 6A state semifinals.

“There’s an awful lot of parity this year in the 16 teams that are going to be trying to fight for four spots to go to the state quarters,” Hair said. “On any given night there is a good seven or eight of us that can beat up on each other.”

Entering Friday, the Hawks had just three more matches before starting regional competition.

“They are aware of how hard it is to win a league title and are also aware of how fragile winning can be when you go into the postseason,” Hair said.

The Hawks lost a lot of senior leadership from last year’s team, but have been able to rely on returning all-state defender Zac Marquess for leadership.
