SM East sophomore beats BV West freshman for championship, lifting Lancers to 6A crown

Youth was well-served (and served well) on Saturday afternoon in Olathe, as Shawnee Mission East’s Gregor Wiedeman claimed the Kansas Class 6A boys singles championship at the College Boulevard Activity Center.

Wiedeman, a sophomore, beat Blue Valley West freshman Francisco Landeras 6-4, 6-1 for the state title.

Shawnee Mission East won the team championship with 41 points, followed by Blue Valley North and Blue Valley Northwest in a tie for second with 34 apiece.

Other state tournament sites in Topeka (host of the 5A tournament finals), Winfield (4A) and Prairie Village (3-2-1A) also produced state champs on Saturday.

In 5A singles, St. Thomas Aquinas junior Russell Lokko beat Mill Valley’s Gage Foltz 6-1, 7-5 for the championship. Topeka West’s Cusick brothers — Ian and Miles — beat Maize South’s Grayson Wright and Mitchell Krumm 6-3, 6-2 for the doubles title.

Maize South claimed the 5A team title, followed by Topeka West and Blue Valley Southwest in third. Mill Valley finished in a tie for fourth with Andover Central.

In 4A, Buhler’s Davian Spies beat Independence’s Kale Groff 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 for the singles title. In doubles, Independence’s Brecken Bertie and Camdon Julian beat Topeka Hayden’s Michael Sandstrom and Gus Glotzbach 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

The final 4A team placement went Independence first, McPherson runner-up and Hayden third.

And in 3-2-1A competition at Kansas City Christian in Prairie Village, Wichita Collegiate’s Nick Grabon completed a perfect season with a championship victory, beating Central Plains’ Peyton Ryan 7-5, 6-0.

A duo from host KC Christian won the 3-2-1A doubles championship, as James Vander Ark and Caleb Bartels teamed up to defeat Wichita Collegiate’s Charlie Dunne and Charlie Nolen.

Wichita Collegiate earned the 3-2-1A team title, well ahead of runner-up Wichita Trinity and Hesston and Smokey Valley, who tied for third. KC Christian finished sixth.
