913 area high school football: Week 5 review
SUNFLOWER LEAGUE
1. Shawnee Mission East (5-0, 4-0)
Last week: Defeated Lawrence Free State 42-14
Wyatt Edmiston ran for two touchdowns and Gunnar Englund passed for two more as the Lancers continued their undefeated league run.
2. Olathe North (5-0, 4-0)
Last week: Defeated Leavenworth 38-22
The Eagles were successful on the ground with five rushing touchdowns, which included a 70-yard punt return by Venus Triplett.
3. Olathe South (4-1, 3-1)
Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission West 31-21
DaeVonte’ Nance rushed for two short touchdowns as the Falcons picked up their second straight victory.
4. Olathe East (3-2, 2-2)
Last week: Lost to Shawnee Mission Northwest 27-7
The Hawks scored just once, on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Chase Miller to Zac Cahill in their second league loss.
5. Olathe Northwest (3-2, 3-1)
Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission North 37-20
The Ravens bounced back from their first Sunflower League loss with their highest scoring game of the season.
6. Lawrence (3-2, 3-1)
Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission South 19-7
JD Woods had two rushing touchdowns for the Chesty Lions, who have two straight wins since losing to Lawrence Free State.
7. Lawrence Free State (2-3, 2-3)
Last week: Lost to Shawnee Mission East 42-14
Bryce Torneden rushed for both of the Firebirds’ touchdowns in their second consecutive loss of the season.
8. Leavenworth (2-3, 1-3)
Last week: Lost to Olathe North 38-22
Isaiah Ross had one rushing and one receiving touchdown from quarterback Landry Hodges, who was 10-for-22 with 103 passing yards.
9. Shawnee Mission Northwest (2-3, 2-2)
Last week: Defeated Olathe East 27-7
Sam Sullivan and Duron Lowe each rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the Cougars’ victory. Lowe had 10 carries for 201 yards.
10. Shawnee Mission South (1-4, 1-4)
Last week: Lost to Lawrence 19-7
The Raiders scored first on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Zach McQueen to Joe Fales, but gave up 19 unanswered points.
11. Shawnee Mission West (1-4, 1-4)
Last week: Lost to Olathe South 31-21
Aaron Rellihan connected with Dante’ Lindsey for a 10-yard touchdown pass and rushed for another in the loss.
12. Shawnee Mission North (0-5, 0-5)
Last week: Lost to Olathe Northwest 37-20
Shawnee Mission North’s schedule does not get any easier this week, with Olathe North up next.
EASTERN KANSAS LEAGUE
1. Bishop Miege (5-0, 5-0)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley West 35-7
Ryan Willis connected with Nolan Gray for two passing touchdowns and Dawson Downing added two on the ground.
2. Blue Valley (4-1, 3-1)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley North 35-7
For the second consecutive week, the Tigers held their opponent to just seven points. Only one opponent has scored more than 13 points.
3. St. Thomas Aquinas (4-1, 3-1)
Last week: Defeated Gardner Edgerton 34-21
Karter Odermann rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Saints bounced back from their first loss.
4. Blue Valley West (3-2, 2-2)
Last week: Lost to Bishop Miege 35-7
Tyler Cox put the Jaguars on the board first with a 4-yard touchdown run, but they then gave up 35 unanswered points.
5. Blue Valley Northwest (3-2, 2-2)
Last week: Defeated Blue Valley Southwest 28-10
Miles Alexander rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. His longest was a 78-yard touchdown run.
6. Blue Valley Southwest (3-2, 2-2)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley Northwest 28-10
Collin Gallery connected with Jamicheal Morgan for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Cameron Barclay added a 28-yard field goal.
7. Blue Valley North (0-5, 0-5)
Last week: Lost to Blue Valley 35-7
The Mustangs have allowed 27 or more points to each one of their opponents this season.
8. Gardner Edgerton (0-5, 0-4)
Last week: Lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 34-21
Colton Mullin rushed for two touchdowns and caught a TD pass from Griffin Jones in the Trailblazers’ loss.
OTHER 913 AREA TEAMS
1. St. James Academy (4-1, IND)
Last week: Defeated Lincoln Prep 35-0
Jake Burgmeier rushed for three touchdowns and Trey Keith passed for two more. The Thunder bounced back from their first loss.
2. Spring Hill (2-3, 2-2)
Last week: Defeated De Soto 37-36
The Broncos overcame a 22-point halftime deficit and defeated De Soto in overtime.
3. De Soto (2-3, 0-2)
Last week: Lost to Spring Hill 37-36
De Soto led 22-0 at halftime, but struggled and scored just once in the second half.
4. Mill Valley (1-4, 0-0)
Last week: Lost to Staley 35-0
Jaguars ventured across the state line and were shutout for the first time this season. It tied a season-high for points allowed.
