Kansas prep soccer: Olathe West, BV Southwest, Miege to play for state titles Saturday
Three Kansas City-area boys high school soccer teams will play for state championships on Saturday after winning their respective semifinals Friday night.
Class 6A Olathe West advanced to Saturday’s championship final with a 2-1 victory over Wichita North (17-2-1) at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe.
Olathe West (12-7-1) advances to play Washburn Rural (19-0-0), which kept its unbeaten season intact with a 2-1 decision over Blue Valley Northwest (8-11-1), in Saturday’s championship game at 2 p.m. at the College Boulevard Activity Center.
At Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex, Class 5A Blue Valley Southwest (16-1-3) beat Valley Center (13-6-1) by a decisive 4-2 margin and will meet Maize South (18-1-1) in Saturday’s 2 p.m. championship game.
Maize South beat St. Thomas Aquinas (14-5-1) 2-1 on Friday. Saturday’s game, like Friday’s semis, will be at the Stryker field in Wichita.
In Class 4-1A, the Bishop Miege Stags, state-tournament regulars in search of their sixth straight state championship, hung five goals on Augusta at Hummer Sports Park’s soccer stadium, and that was enough. In fact, with Augusta (17-3) scoring its lone goal before intermission, that was the eventual final score: Miege 5, Augusta 1.
Miege (12-8-2) will play Wichita’s Trinity Academy (15-5), a 3-0 winner Friday over Tonganoxie (12-7-1), in Saturday’s 2 p.m. championship match at Hummer Park. The Stags beat Trinity in consecutive state finals for their last two state championships.
