Liberty North sophomore Bailey Burkett claims school’s first state title in girls golf

Sophomore Bailey Burkett led the Missouri Class 4 high school golf championships wire to wire this week, earning the first girls state golf title in Liberty North history on Tuesday in Springfield.

Burkett shot an opening-round 70 and followed that up with a second-day 73 to finish the 36-hole tournament at 1-under par on the Rivercut Golf Course.

Isabella Arro of St. Joseph’s Academy was second at 4-over, Siena Minor of Rock Bridge placed third at 5-over and Staley’s Jaylee Castro came in fourth at 7-over.

Burkett’s teammates, led by Averi Mickelson, who tied for sixth at 9-over, helped Liberty North to a runner-up showing in the team standings behind this year’s Class 4 champion, St. Joseph’s Academy.

Maya McVey of Blue Springs South was the KC-area’s next-highest finisher, at 10-over (tied for eighth).

Liberty North also got scoring contributions from Emmy Braden (T-15) and Kate Braden (T-34).

In the Class 3 state tournament at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, Reagan Zibilski of Springfield Catholic was the medalist at 5-under, and Springfield Catholic also won the team championship.

Marlene Edgeman of Marshfield won the Class 2 championship with a 9-over final tally at Columbia Country Club in Columbia; Visitation Academy took the team title.

And in Class 1 competition at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, Savannah Thessing of New Covenant was the individual champion at 28-over, while Villa Duchesne took home the team title.
