KC area high school football schedule for Oct. 3-4

Here are two games in the spotlight on Friday’s Kansas City area high school football schedule:

PLATTE COUNTY (6-0) AT KEARNEY (5-1)

It might seem like this marquee matchup lost a bit of its luster last week when Kearney suffered its first defeat of the season, a 17-14 loss to Winnetonka. In actuality, it added more intrigue.

If Kearney can protect its home field Friday — where it hasn’t dropped a game since Oct. 31, 2012 — every team in the Suburban Blue Conference will have lost at least once in league play with two weeks left in the regular season.

Platte County has allowed only 10.1 points per game. The Pirates’ offense is starting to play its part in the unbeaten record, with sophomore quarterback Justin Mitchell accounting for six touchdowns over the last two weeks.

SM WEST (1-3) at OLATHE SOUTH (3-1)

Shawnee Mission West might be only 1-3, but the Vikings have faced one of the toughest schedules in the Sunflower League. SM West will try to bounce back from a 23-point loss to rival SM East at 7 p.m. Friday at the Olathe District Activity Center.

Other than its one-point, double-overtime loss to Olathe North in week three, Olathe South has looked like a pretty good contender. The Falcons are coming off a 35-14 victory against Olathe Northwest and have scored 24 or more points in all four of their games this season.
