The Star’s high school athletes of the week (Oct. 1)
Emily Venters
SCHOOL: Lawrence Free State
YEAR: Sophomore
SPORT: Cross Country
Venters ran a time of 18 minutes, 44.90 seconds and won the 5,000-meter Platinum Girls Varsity run at the Rim Rock Classic last Saturday. Her individual title also helped the Firebirds finish second as a team. She has finished first in all three meets she has entered this season and will attempt to defend her Kansas Class 6A state title later this fall on the same course.

Alex Albracht
SCHOOL: Rockhurst
YEAR: Senior
SPORT: Swimming
The Hawklets cruised to victory at the COMO Invitational last weekend, and team captain Alex Albracht led them there. He won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke in Columbia and also took part on the winning medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams. Albracht has already qualified for state in eight events.
