Basehor-Linwood gets redemption: scores from Kansas, Missouri state high school hoops

Last year, Basehor-Linwood fell one win shy of its first high school basketball title since 2012, and the Bobcats played the team they lost to in the first round this time around.

No. 2 Basehor-Linwood beat No. 7 Andover Central 76-72 in the quarterfinals of the Kansas Class 5A state tournament.

“When we saw the bracket come out, I think the whole team was very happy we got to play them first round,” Bobcat senior Connor Younger said. “We had to get our redemption, and we did.”

Younger finished tied with sophomore Jordan Brown for a team-high 29 points. Younger was a key piece to last year’s state semifinal victory over Bishop Carroll, in which Basehor-Linwood came back from double-digits in the fourth quarter.

After that semifinal, Younger was in the locker room screaming because of leg cramps. Basehor-Linwood coach Mike McBride said his group wasn’t 100% healthy for last year’s state-title game against Andover Central (14-9).

They were ready Wednesday night.

“We have incredible balance,” McBride said. “We’ve got a great point guard. Got a great big man and two kids that can flat light it up. Our role players can all hit shots. They all play defense. We’re athletic across the board.”

With the win, Basehor-Linwood (20-2) advances to the final four for the sixth time in school history and will face the winner of a game between No. 3 Hays (16-6) and No. 6 Topeka Highland Park (15-7).

Piper makes its four straight semis

State basketball is underway across Kansas, and Piper High’s girls team has made it back to the semifinals.

The third-seeded Class 4A Pirates (21-2) beat No. 6 seed Baldwin 63-48 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

For the fourth straight year, Piper will play for a chance to go to the title game. The Pirates led Baldwin by 27 with 3:38 to go.

Last year, Piper met Bishop Miege in the state championship game and lost. The Pirates have a chance to meet the Stags in the title contest again in 2020. But first, they must get through No. 7 Clay Center (17-6), which upset No. 2 Eudora 47-42 in the quarterfinal round.

Here are results from some other Wednesday Kansas quarterfinals involving KC-area teams.

Miege reaches 7th straight semifinal

Bishop Miege made quick work of No. 5 Chapman in its Class 4A quarterfinal.

The No. 4 Stags beat Chapman 60-45 on Wednesday in Salina to reach their seventh straight state semifinal and 35th in school history. That expands on their state record.

Chapman had three girls finish in double-digit, but Miege had three of its own. Emajin McCallop led the way with 20 points. Ashton Verhulst added 14. Gabriella Henderson-Artis had 11.

Miege will play No. 1 Nickerson (21-2) in its semfinal in order to reach its 28th state championship game and seventh straight as well.

Olathe East pulls out win in final minute to advance to Class 6A semifinals

In what felt like a rollercoaster finish, Olathe East lost the lead, regained it and then had to sweat out the final seconds for a pair of missed free throws that allowed it to hold on for a 49-48 victory over Wichita Heights in the Class 6A quarterfinals at Koch Arena in Wichita.

After leading by five points, Olathe East gave up an 8-0 run to go down by three points in the final two minutes. But the Hawks rallied and took the lead on what became the game-winner by sophomore Aubrey Rogers, who finished with a team-high 18 points, on an off-balanced runner in the lane in the final minute of play.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it, to be honest,” Rogers said. “It was kind of a hard shot, but (the pressure) kind of goes away when you’re playing.”

Olathe East had a chance to boost its lead at the free throw line with 12 seconds left, but missed the first free throw and Heights rebounded and drove the length of the floor and was fouled with three seconds remaining. Heights star Laniah Randle, who scored a game-high 22 points, went to the foul line but missed both free throws as Olathe East (18-5) survived and advanced to Friday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal against undefeated Topeka (22-0).

“Against a team like that, that plays the way that they do, you just have to survive there at the end,” East coach Brian Martin said. “And in the fourth quarter, we didn’t rebound that well, which is normally a strength. But we did finish that last play with a strong rebound. They just weren’t going to quit, they were going to battle until the end.”

It was just the second loss of the season for Heights. Olathe East won despite giving up 14 offensive rebounds and committing 16 turnovers.

Martin was in awe of Rogers, a sophomore, and her timely shots throughout the game.

“She played well the whole game for us,” Martin said. “That was a tough shot, especially being down and being a sophomore taking that shot was big for her.”

Shawnee Mission Northwest (18-5) lost a heartbreaker of its own earlier Wednesday, as it dropped a 44-39 game in double overtime to Derby (21-2). The Cougars held for the final possession in both regulation and the first overtime, but came up empty on both chances. Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Kennedy Taylor scored a game-high 14 points with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Olathe North (16-7) also saw its season come to an end, as it was blitzed in the first quarter by Topeka (23-0) and never recovered in a 79-55 loss. Topeka led 30-6 after the first quarter and although Olathe North rallied back, it never was able to come within single digits again. Senior Elyia Bruce scored a team-high 18 points with 10 rebounds, while Sania Copeland added 15 points for Olathe North.
