St. Pius X to play for Class 2 soccer title

St. Pius X’s junior forward Allison Malott went into Friday’s Missouri Class 2 girls soccer state semifinal hoping to break out of her postseason funk.

Even though it was her first trip to the state tournament, she did just that by scoring all of the Warriors’ goals in a 3-1 victory against St. Pius X Festus at Blue Springs High School.

“I had chills after the first one and my body was all goosebumps at the end of the game,” Malott said. “It was an amazing feeling.”

The Warriors fell behind early with a seventh minute goal, but Malott was able to tie the score before halftime with a one-on-one run. She buried the ball into the right corner of the goal and her day was just beginning.

Malott’s second shot sailed into the right side of the goal from 20 feet out in the 47th minute and her third followed in the 61st to seal the victory.

“I’ve been off on the postseason so far and I was saying that I needed a game and was due for a good game,” Malott said. “Today felt different.”

Malott ranks second on the team with 37 goals in 23 games. The only player ahead of her is Sydney Routh, who has 39 in the same span.

The Warriors, who won their 18th consecutive game to improve to 21-4, will play for the state title at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Blue Springs.

“We are very close because we go to a small school and are in most of the same classes,” Malott said. “The bonding and the sisterhood of our team is really keeping us together.”
