Blue Valley Southwest, Aquinas win and will meet in Class 5A soccer final
The St. Thomas Aquinas girls soccer team scored one goal in the first half and made it stand up in beating Wichita Carroll in the Class 5A semifinals.
The Saints will be looking for their fifth consecutive state title and 15th overall in the title game Saturday at 2 p.m.
The only goal came when senior Jamie Kutney made a run down the right side. Her shot deflected off the Carroll keeper to junior Addison Denning at about 12 yards from the goal. Her shot found the back of the net with 24:01 left in the half.
“She didn’t stop and watch,” Saints coach Craig Ewing said. “She was our player of the game. She was everywhere.”
The Saints dominated play with a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.
“We had the ball a lot but only had one goal,” Ewing said.
Ewing said the play of the game came from freshman keeper Alia Calvert with six minutes to go.
“Our girl slipped, but she came out punch the ball out,” Ewing said.
The Saints had a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Both Crusader shots came in the last six minutes.
Blue Valley Southwest 2, Maize South 0
Blue Valley Southwest scored two first half goals and blanked Maize South 2-0 in the second 5A state semifinal game.
Both goals came on balls that bounced around the goal.
The first one was early and came on a header by senior Lauren Lambrecht with 36:33 left in the first half.
The second came in a similar situation late in the first half with junior Rilynne Like header the ball into the back of the net with just 6:57 left.
“We dominated the game, but we left some goals out there that we usually score,” coach Jason Pendleton said. “It was a workmanlike effort and we get to play in the state title game again.
“We didn’t want to look ahead to playing Aquinas again.”
The Timberwolves, 18-2, had a big advantage in shots on goal at 14-1.
They will meet an Aquinas team that beat BV Southwest 2-1 in overtime in last season’s state title game. They beat the Saints 2-1 in overtime during the regular season.
This will be the third time that the teams have met in the championship match. Aquinas won in 2011, the Timberwolves first year of existence.
