Kansas City schools capture a pair of Kansas state high school golf championships

St. Thomas Aquinas won its second straight Kansas Class 5A girls high school golf state championship Tuesday at Hesston Golf Park. The Saints won it with 324 strokes, edging out Andover — the team they beat last year, too.

Aquinas junior Maggie King and sophomore Brooke King led the way with top-five finishes. Maggie took runner-up with a 6-over, 77, and Brooke was a stroke behind her with a 7-over, 78. She finished fourth through a scorecard tiebreaker.

“We knew it was going to be really close this year,” Maggie said. “Andover is a really good team.”

In Class 6A competition at Salina Municipal, the Mill Valley Jaguars earned the school’s first girls golf title with a 323-stroke total, topping Shawnee Mission East by just four.

Mill Valley was all over the top of the leaderboard, with two of the top three finishers, including senior Sarah Lawson, who finished 18 holes tied for the individual state championship at 3-over 73. She lost in the playoff to 6A champ Julia Misemer, a freshman out of Blue Valley West.

Mill Valley freshman Libby Green was one stroke away from making it a three-way tie at the top. She finished with a 4-over 74.

On the Missouri side, Megan Propeck of Notre Dame de Sion earned the Class 2 championship with a 71-68—139 at Swope Park.

Notre Dame de Sion finished second in the team competition to St. Joseph’s Academy.
