Olathe East’s James McGinnis showing signs of improvement
Olathe East High School senior linebacker James McGinnis is showing signs of improvement, according to a statement released Tuesday by his father, Pat, through HCA Midwest assistant vice president Chris Hamele.
“No one more wants to see James recover more than his family. While it will be a long road and require patience for us all, we remain hopeful. Today was a good day, as he showed signs of improvement, including responses when we played his favorite music from the Zac Brown band. Although his reactions were small, we will gratefully take everything we can.
“On behalf of James, his father, Pat, is presenting Olathe East Football with a decal with his favorite saying: “Play like a champion” #9. This is how we find inspiration during this difficult time, through these young kids, athletes and coaches who love James more than life itself and who James loves back. Thank you for the outpouring of support. #PrayForJames, please.”
McGinnis remains in critical but stable condition after collapsing on the field and undergoing emergency surgery Friday night to reduce swelling and stop bleeding around his brain. The surgery was successful, and he was moved to intensive care at Overland Park Regional Medical Center early Saturday morning.
