Where does Kearney belong in the Missouri Class 4 football poll? Here’s what the voters say…

Kearney’s Reagan Frakes broke through the line for the game’s only touchdown at the game between Kearney and Liberty North at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., on September 5, 2014.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious which Missouri classification is the most difficult to rank. The top eight teams in the Missouri Class 4 poll are undefeated, and while Webb City seemingly has the No. 1 slot on lockdown with four consecutive state championships, Kearney and Helias could make their cases, too.

Kearney’s physical brand of play would be an interesting matchup for Webb City’s run-heavy offense should they meet in the postseason. Kearney improved to 4-0 with a 49-28 victory against Raytown South last week.

The voters have ranked Kearney third in Class 4 behind Webb City and Helias. I have the Bulldogs second on my ballot and think they will reach the Edward Jones Dome this season. Can they beat Webb City there? That’s a harder question to answer.

The bottom half of the Class 4 poll isn’t much easier to rank. Noticeably absent from the poll is Platte County, which improved to 4-0 on Friday with a victory against Park Hill South. The Pirates haven’t received much love from the voters, but that will undoubtedly change if they can knock off Winnetonka this week.

The poll is compiled by a 15-member panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, including myself; Dion Clisso, PrepsKC; Chris Geinosky, The Liberty Tribune; Earl Austin, The St. Louis American; Dave Kvidahl, STLHighschoolsports.com; Jim Powers, High School Sports Caravan ; Rus Baer, freelance writer; Tom Rackers, Jefferson City News-Tribune; Mike Scott, Ozone Sports; Rance Burger, The Springfield News-Leader; Dave Roberts, The Rolla Daily News; Cody Thorn, The St. Joseph News-Press; Kevin Foedinger, KRES radio; Chris Pobst, Sikeston Standard-Democrat; and Donn Adamson, The Daily Journal.
