KC area high school football schedule for Sept. 5-6

THE KANSAS CITY STAR

Here are three games in the spotlight on Friday’s Kansas City area high school football schedule:

1. FORT OSAGE (2-0) AT LEE’S SUMMIT (2-0)

Fort Osage is ranked as the top team in Missouri Class 5, but a victory against Blue Springs last week proved it may be the best football team in the state — regardless of class. The Indians knocked off the two-time defending Class 6 state champions 35-21.

This would be a bad time for a letdown.

Lee’s Summit possesses one of the best offenses in the state. Quarterback Drew Lock already has seven touchdowns in two weeks. And while Hunter Allee has emerged as his favorite early-season target, Lock has shown a willingness to spread the ball around to a variety of receivers.

All eyes will be on the quarterbacks Friday. Fort Osage signal-caller Skylar Thompson, another pass-first threat, scored four touchdowns last week.

2. SM EAST (0-0) AT GARDNER EDGERTON (0-0)

SM East enters this season with a big chip on its shoulder. They lost just once in the regular season last year and advanced to the Kansas Class 6A state championship game in coach Dustin Delaney’s first year at the helm. But the Lancers lost that game to Derby and are perhaps the squad most anxious to get things going this season. They return most of their starters from that team and a healthy Gunnar Englund at quarterback.

Gardner Edgerton also had a strong season last year. The Trailblazers, like the Lancers, posted an 8-1 record in the regular season. They then suffered a first-round playoff loss to Olathe East. They face a stiff challenge after graduating quarterback Jared Hobby and running back Traveohn Wrench, the Eastern Kansas League Offensive Player of the Year.

3. KEARNEY (2-0) AT LIBERTY NORTH (2-0)

Liberty North and Kearney have flip-flopped classifications, but not much else has changed for two programs that were within one game of playing for a state championship last season.

At least not yet.

A year after reaching the Missouri Class 5 semifinals, Kearney has outscored its first two opponents 91-7. Quarterback Johnny Weidmaier pilots an efficient passing game — he had three touchdowns in a win against Liberty on Friday — while Reagan Frakes has taken the reigns of a successful running game.

But that duo will be heavily tested Friday night against Liberty North.

In two games, Liberty North has yet to allow a point. The Eagles, who played in the Class 4 semifinals last season, shut out Raytown and Blue Springs South in their first two weeks as a Class 5 program. Not a bad introduction.

The Liberty North secondary has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. The Eagles have picked off 10 passes in two weeks.
