Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel beats St. Thomas Aquinas 44-43 in Kansas 5A girls third-place game
St. Thomas Aquinas senior Molly Schmidt stepped to the free-throw line with 35 seconds remaining with her team trailing by one point in overtime. Schmidt made both free throws to give the Saints the lead.
But Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Sam Bachrodt wiped it away 15 seconds later with a running bank shot, lifting the Crusaders to a 44-43 victory Saturday afternoon in the Kansas 5A girls third-place game. Bachrodt finished with 18.
Leading St. Thomas Aquinas was senior center Claire Ferguson, who went seven for eight from the line and finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Saints finished the season 21-4.
