Lee’s Summit West girls pull away in second half, defeat Truman in sectional
The Lee’s Summit West Titans controlled the paint and the second half and ran away with a 51-38 win over Truman in a Missouri Class 5 sectional on Wednesday night at Grandview High School.
The Titans outscored Truman 32-18 over the final 16 minutes to improve to 22-6 and move into Saturday’s state quarterfinals. Truman ended its season 18-9.
Truman started hot and jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Patriots had an 18-12 lead after Briana Savage’s layup midway through the second quarter. Then the Titans scored seven of the first half’s final nine points, including Daphne Plummer’s long jumper.
“That was a huge shot,” Lee’s Summit West coach Jeff Hardin said. “There were two shots that were huge for us … the other was Harper Leach’s three-pointer.”
Leach’s trey came late in the third quarter and capped an 8-0 run that pushed Lee’s Summit West to a 37-25 lead. The third quarter started with Lee’s Summit West scoring 10 of the first 12 points.
Lee’s Summit West was a force inside, led by De’Jionae Calloway’s game-high 19 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. Taylor Jackson added 15 for West and Austin Richardson had 10.
Truman got a team-high 15 points from Kierra Collier, while Savage chipped in with 11.
