12-1 second-half run gives Rockhurst momentum in sectional win over Lee’s Summit

Rockhurst’s performance on Wednesday night against Lee’s Summit in a Missouri Class 5 sectional game seemed a fitting microcosm for the Hawklets’ season — a slow start, followed by domination.

Rockhurst overcame a 10-point second-quarter deficit and beat Lee’s Summit 69-51 in front of a packed house at Grandview High School.

It was the 11th victory in 12 games after a 5-10 start for Rockhurst. The Hawklets, 16-11, advance to Saturday’s Missouri Class 5 quarterfinals. The victory also avenged Rockhurst’s 11-point loss to Lee’s Summit in January.

“It started with getting stops on defense,” said Rockhurst senior Patrick Geha, who scored a team-high 17 points, 15 of which came during the second-half run. “We started getting stops and our shots started falling.”

Lee’s Summit, which finished its season 21-7, led 23-13 after a 9-0 run spurred a Rockhurst timeout with 4 minutes, 38 seconds to play in the second quarter. But Rockhurst scored six of the final eight points of the half and then quickly took the lead in the third quarter.

Rockhurst opened the second half with a 12-1 run — seven of those points coming from Geha — and outscored the Tigers 27-8 in the third quarter. The Hawklets led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Adam Bowers added 15 points for Rockhurst and teammate Will Bazzle had 11.

Lee’s Summit got a game-high 22 points from Drew Lock and 10 from Jordan Bennett. The Tigers hit just six of their 31 three-point attempts and were outrebounded 31-22.
