KC area high school football schedule for Aug. 29-30
Here are three games spotlight games on Friday’s Kansas City area high school football schedule:
1. Blue Springs (1-0) at Fort Osage (1-0)
It’s No. 1 vs. No. 1.
As two-time defending state champions, Blue Springs opened the season as the top-ranked team in Missouri Class 6, and it followed through with an impressive showing against Staley. The Wildcats’ counterpart Friday, Fort Osage, is ranked first in the Class 5 state media poll. That makes for an especially intriguing non-conference matchup.
Fort Osage has been known for intimidating defense in recent seasons, but this fall the offense isn’t short on talent. Skylar Thompson threw for two touchdowns in a win against Raytown South last week, and Jesse McBee ran for four scores in his first start at running back.
The key battle Friday will be up front, where an inexperienced Fort Osage offensive line will look to slow down a Blue Springs defense line that features Carlos Davis, Khalil Davis and Trevon Warmack.
2. Webb City (1-0) at Rockhurst (1-0)
Rockhurst coach Tony Severino commented last week that he wasn’t sure how his team would stack up against a loaded schedule. But he knew he would find out quickly with a season-opening trip to Rock Bridge, last year’s Class 6 state runner-up.
The answer came even quicker than imagined.
Rockhurst scored four touchdowns in the first quarter on its way to an unexpected 49-14 rout. T.J. Green threw three touchdowns and ran for another.
The schedule doesn’t let up. Webb City has won four straight Missouri Class 4 state championships, and it’s considered the favorite to make it five straight.
Webb City makes no secret about its offensive game plan: It won last year’s state title game without completing a pass.
3. Park Hill (1-0) at Smithville (1-0)
Smithville wasn’t pleased with the way it finished the 2013 season. Park Hill wasn’t either. After one week, it appears the 2014 season will include brighter days for both programs.
Park Hill could not have been more impressive in its season opener, destroying Blue Springs South 43-18. Tailback Kenyatte Harris injured his wrist after opening last season with three straight 100-yard games, but he picked up right where he left off and scored four touchdowns last week. Harris is a dangerous assignment in the spread offense, given his blend of speed and pass-catching ability out of the backfield.
Smithville handed Pleasant Hill a 17-0 defeat a year after losing the same season-opening matchup. The Warriors posted their first defensive shutout since 2012 by holding Pleasant Hill to less than 100 yards of offense after halftime. The assignment, however, is undoubtedly more difficult Friday night.
