Sunflower League Week 2 football rankings

Here are the Sunflower League football rankings after Week 2, including league record, overall record, last week’s result, this week’s opponent and a comment.

Sunflower League

1. Shawnee Mission East (2-0, 2-0)

Beat Shawnee Mission Northwest, 48-6; Friday at Rockhurst

No one has come close this season to the Lancers, who have won by a combined 97 points the first two weeks.

2. Shawnee Mission West (2-0, 2-0)

Beat Leavenworth, 40-17; Friday vs. Blue Springs

Quarterback Zach Witters has nine total touchdowns this season, both on the ground and through the air. Last week, Jason Meeker got in on the versatility, with a kickoff return for a touchdown, plus receiving and rushing scores against Leavenworth.

3. Lawrence (2-0, 2-0)

Beat Shawnee Mission North, 52-26; Friday at Lee’s Summit West

Lawrence has used a solid rushing game to solidify its position in the league so far. The Chesty Lions have put up at least 50 points in each of their first two games.

4. Lawrence Free State (1-1, 1-1)

Beat Shawnee Mission South, 38-0; Friday at Park Hill

Quarterback Dallas Crittenden went 12-for-19 through the air last week, and Free State’s defense shut out Shawnee Mission South for the team’s first league victory.

5. Olathe North (1-0, 1-1)

Beat Olathe South, 21-20; Thursday vs. Blue Springs South

Quarterback Mason Myers scored all three of North’s touchdowns last week for both a rivalry win and the team’s first Sunflower League win.

6. Shawnee Mission North (1-1, 1-1)

Lost to Lawrence, 52-26; Friday vs Lansing

Albeit in a loss last week, North quarterback Will Schneider continued to impress with 300 passing yards. Sophomore Billy Conaway is also charging to the forefront of the team’s offense, scoring twice off his two carries last week.

7. Olathe East (1-0, 1-1)

Beat Olathe Northwest, 20-14; Friday vs. Liberty

Olathe East had a lackluster start to the season, with a 41-13 loss to Hutchinson, but bounced back against rival Olathe Northwest.

8. Olathe Northwest (0-1, 0-2)

Lost to Olathe East, 20-14; Thursday vs. Lee’s Summit North

The Ravens have struggled to start 2016, but they haven’t been embarrassed, losing by a combined seven points in two games.

9. Leavenworth (0-2, 0-2)

Lost to Shawnee Mission West, 40-17; Friday at North Kansas City

A week after totaling 274 yards of offense, sophomore Anthony Gould ripped off a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and continues to be a bright spot for 0-2 Leavenworth.

10. Olathe South (0-2, 0-2)

Lost to Olathe North, 21-20; Friday vs. Lee’s Summit

The 2016 season hasn’t gone so well for Olathe South: The team laid an egg against Shawnee Mission East, losing 62-7, then lost to rival Olathe North via a two-point conversion failure.

11. Shawnee Mission South (0-2, 0-2)

Lost to Lawrence Free State, 38-0; Thursday at Winnetonka

South has scored only one touchdown this season, and allowed 38 points for two games in a row.

12. Shawnee Mission Northwest (0-2, 0-2)

Lost to Shawnee Mission East, 48-6; Thursday vs. Grandview

The good news for Northwest: Xavier Perry continues to have a solid season, and scored a 73-yard touchdown against Shawnee Mission East last week. The bad news: That score came when Northwest was already down 41-0, solidifying its 0-2 start to the season.

Other 913-area teams

1. De Soto (1-0, 2-0)

Beat Bonner Springs 28-0; Friday vs. Louisburg

Quarterback Bryce Mohl had two rushing scores against Bonner Springs. He and his De Soto teammates will have a tough opportunity against one of the top small-class teams in the area, Louisburg.

2. Spring Hill (0-0, 0-2)

Lost to Basehor-Linwood, 50-12; Friday vs. Paola

Things don’t get easier for 0-2 Spring Hill, who has to take on Paola this week. Spring Hill has given up a total of 83 points this season.

3. Maranatha/Immaculata (0-2, 0-2)

Lost to Jefferson County North, 54-0; Friday vs. McLouth

The combined Maranatha/Immaculata squad hasn’t scored in two games this season, and has given up a combined 98 points.
