High school football: Eastern Kansas League Week 1 rankings

Here are the Eastern Kansas League football rankings after Week 1, including league record, overall record, last week’s result, this week’s opponent and a comment.

1. Blue Valley (1-0, 1-0)

Beat Bishop Miege 35-28; Friday at Blue Valley West

Gus Gomez (three receiving touchdowns) and Will Evans (two rushing touchdowns) led Blue Valley to a win over the Kansas Class 4A-DI defending champion.

2. Blue Valley North (1-0, 1-0)

Beat Blue Valley Northwest, 28-14; Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas

The Mustangs outscored Blue Valley Northwest 14-0 in the second half on the way to their first conference win.

3. Blue Valley West (1-0, 1-0)

Beat Blue Valley Southwest 20-17; Friday vs. Blue Valley

Head coach Josh Koerkenmeier recorded his first career win on the heels of running back Adam Davis’ three touchdowns.

4. Mill Valley (1-0, 1-0)

Beat St. James Academy 35-13; Thursday at Blue Valley Northwest

All five of Mill Valley’s touchdowns were passes from quarterback Brody Flaming, and the team rolled over St. James in both teams’ first EKL games.

5. St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0, 1-0)

Beat Gardner Edgerton, 42-13; Friday vs. Blue Valley North

Junior running back Drew Hicks scored half of St. Thomas Aquinas’ six touchdowns, and the Saints clobbered Gardner Edgerton.

6. Bishop Miege (0-1, 0-1)

Lost to Blue Valley 35-28; Friday at Gardner Edgerton

Carter Putz had three touchdown passes, including a 65-yard bomb to Jafar Armstrong, but Miege couldn’t keep up with the Tigers.

7. Blue Valley Northwest (0-1, 0-1)

Lost to Blue Valley North, 28-14; Thursday vs. Mill Valley

Blue Valley Northwest had a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter after a Garret Tierney kickoff return for a touchdown, but the team never scored again.

8. Blue Valley Southwest (0-1, 0-1)

Lost to Blue Valley West 20-17; Friday vs St. James Academy

Southwest fumbled the ball away twice, and lost control of a 10-7 lead in the third quarter.

9. Gardner Edgerton (0-1, 0-1)

Lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 42-13; Friday vs. Bishop Miege

Gardner Edgerton scored a touchdown on the first play of the game, but couldn’t get much going offensively after that.

10. St. James Academy (0-1, 0-1)

Lost to Mill Valley, 35-13; Friday at Blue Valley Southwest

The Thunder didn’t score in the second or third quarters, and couldn’t keep up in its Eastern Kansas League debut.
