High school football: Sunflower League Week 1 rankings
Here are the Sunflower League football rankings after Week 1, including league record, overall record, last week’s result, this week’s opponent and a comment.
1. Lawrence (1-0, 1-0)
Beat Shawnee Mission Northwest, 50-20; Friday vs. Shawnee Mission North
Lawrence running back Trey Moore rumbled for four touchdowns on the ground.
2. Shawnee Mission East (1-0, 1-0)
Beat Olathe South, 62-7; Friday vs Shawnee Mission Northwest
The Lancers scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, took a 34-0 lead into halftime and never slowed down.
3. Shawnee Mission North (1-0, 1-0)
Beat Shawnee Mission South, 38-7; Friday at Lawrence
Senior quarterback Will Schneider led a dynamic offensive performance for North, with five touchdowns (four through the air).
4. Shawnee Mission West (1-0, 1-0)
Beat Lawrence Free State, 41-40; Friday at Leavenworth
Zach Witters had three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns, but perhaps most importantly in a one-point game, kicker Alex Jasso made all five of his extra-point attempts.
5. Leavenworth (0-0, 0-1)
Lost to Lansing, 30-28; Friday vs. Shawnee Mission West
Dylan McLain passed for two touchdowns, and Anthony Gould added a couple of rushing scores.
6. Olathe East (0-0, 0-1)
Lost to Hutchinson, 41-13; Friday vs. Olathe Northwest
The Hawks managed two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But after facing a 35-0 deficit after three quarters, those were too little, too late.
7. Olathe North (0-0, 0-1)
Lost to Wichita Heights, 41-21; Friday at Olathe South
Malik Baynum-Brown had two rushing touchdowns, but Olathe North was outscored 20-0 in the first quarter and never recovered.
8. Olathe Northwest (0-0, 0-1)
Lost to Goddard, 27-26; Friday at Olathe East
Northwest scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, but a missed extra point in the second overtime was all it took for a loss.
9. Lawrence Free State (0-1, 0-1)
Lost to Shawnee Mission West, 41-40; Friday at Shawnee Mission South
Zion Bowlin and Jax Dineen each had two rushing touchdowns, but the Firebirds also had two failed two-point conversions in a close game.
10. Olathe South (0-1, 0-1)
Lost to Shawnee Mission East, 62-7; Friday vs. Olathe North
The Falcons didn’t score until less than two minutes remained in the fourth quarter, when the result had long been decided.
11. Shawnee Mission Northwest (0-1, 0-1)
Lost to Lawrence, 50-20; Friday at Shawnee Mission East
Xavier Perry scored three touchdowns, but they were all in the second half, and too late to overcome a powerful Lawrence offense.
12. Shawnee Mission South (0-1, 0-1)
Lost to Shawnee Mission North, 38-7; Friday vs. Lawrence Free State
South had trouble stopping North’s offense, allowing more than 500 total yards and 38 points.
OTHERS
1. Spring Hill (0-0, 0-1)
Lost to Tonganoxie, 33-13; Friday at Basehor-Linwood
Spring Hill allowed a touchdown on the first play of the game, and the rest of the night didn’t get much better.
2. De Soto (1-0, 1-0)
Beat Ottawa, 28-27; Friday at Bonner Springs
The Wildcats spread the love, with four different players scoring touchdowns. Three of those scores were on the ground, on the way to 323 total rushing yards.
3. Maranatha/Immaculata (0-1, 0-1)
Lost to Jackson Heights, 44-0; Friday at Jefferson County North
A very young Maranatha/Immaculata squad couldn’t handle Jackson Heights’ offense; its own offense, starting six freshmen, couldn’t get anything going to keep up.
