UMKC’s Antoine Rozner among the leaders in NCAA golf regional
UMKC senior Antoine Rozner shot a 2-under-par 70 and was tied for second place Monday after the first round of the NCAA men’s golf regional at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Rozner was 2 over par through 10 holes but got those shots back with birdies on Nos. 12 and 15. He then closed with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
He helped UMKC finish the round in a tie for eighth place with a 308 team total, 5 shots out of a fifth-place tie between Augusta and Purdue.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional after three rounds will advance to the finals May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
Nolen Stratton was the individual lead with a 68 and helped Oklahoma State, the regional host, gain the lead with a 292 total.
At the regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Kansas was in 10th place with a 308 total. That is 24 shots behind leader Georgia and 16 behind fifth-place Alabama.
Connor Peck led the Jayhawks with a 74 and was tied for 26th place individually.
U.S. Open qualifying
Clay Devers and Preston Fleenor took different paths, but both shot 1-under-par 71 in the U.S. Open local qualfying tournament Monday at Sycamore Ridge.
Devers, from Shawnee, birdied the third hole and made pars on all 17 other holes while Fleenor, a freshman on the University of Missouri golf team who played in high school at Pembroke Hill, had six birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.
The third player to qualify was another MU golfer, sophomore Linus Lilliedahl, who shot a 72. He won a playoff against Alex Higgs and Hayden Buckley.
Sectional qualifying at sites in the United States is set for June 6, and the U.S. Open will be held June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
