Golfer survives close call, remains alive in Kansas City Match Play

When Michael Greene arrived at Swope Memorial Golf Course on Saturday morning, he wasn’t sure how much golf he would get to play. It turned out to be a lot.

Greene was 1-down with one hole to play against Eric Englund when their first-round match was suspended Friday night.

Greene, the top seed, tied that match with a par on the final hole and then won the first playoff hole.

Then once Greene got going, there was no stopping him.

Greene took a 4 and 3 victory over Charlie Schorgl in the second round and beat Chuck Moore 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

That put Greene in the semifinals at 7:30 a.m. Sunday against Craig Broswick.

Broswick opened the day with a touch match, beating T.J. Pennington 1-up in 21 holes after Pennington had tied it by winning No. 18. Broswick then cruised past Zach Sanders 7 and 6.

In the bottom half of the bracket, Jeff Mason advanced by edging Dave Cunningham 1-up and then defeating last year’s champion, Ryne Fisher, 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals.

Mason’s semifinal opponent will be Jackson Foth, who beat Josh Weems 2-up in the quarterfinals.

Foth and Mason will tee off at 7:39 a.m. Sunday. The championship match also is played Sunday.
