Shawnee’s Robert Streb has sights set on $10 million prize for topping FedEx Cup standings
While growing up in Oklahoma and playing college golf at Kansas State, Robert Streb never dreamed he would have a chance to win $10 million in one tournament.
But that is the case this week at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, the final event of the 2014-2015 PGA Tour season.
Streb, who makes his home in Shawnee, is one of 30 golfers in the field aiming to finish on top of the FedEx Cup standings and claim the $10 million bonus that goes to the golfer who finishes No. 1.
Thanks to the best season of his career, Streb enters the tournament 14th in the standings. He can finish No. 1 by winning this week and getting some help from the golfers ranked in the top five.
“I just need good fundamentals,” Streb said. “If I strike the ball well and putt well, I will have a chance.”
Streb, 28, has been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour this season. He gained his first PGA Tour win last fall at The McGladrey Classic. In 27 starts this season, he made the cut 24 times and had nine top-10 finishes with earnings of $3,787,374.
“It was a great season for me, a season of firsts. I got my first win and got to play in all four majors,” Streb said. “I hit a bump in the road in the spring but overall am very pleased with the way I have played this season.”
Two other golfers who have had terrific seasons are Jason Day and Jordan Spieth, who are battling for player of the year honors.
Many thought that was decided when Spieth won the Masters and U.S. Open, missed a playoff by 1 stroke, tied for fourth at the British Open and finished second at the PGA Championship.
But Day has gotten in the race with five wins this year, including the PGA Championship. Day has moved to No. 1 in the world ranking by winning four of his last six starts.
“I still think it’s” Spieth, Day said when asked who should be player of the year. “But I’m hoping that I can go and win (the Tour Championship) and get people talking about it a lot more.”
