Former Kansas golfer Chase Hanna has gotten hot in the desert.
Hanna, who played in high school at Shawnee Mission East, and finished his college career at KU this spring, is in first place after two rounds of the Southwestern Amateur in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Hanna followed up a 5-under 65 from Wednesday with a 3-under 67 on Thursday on the difficult Geronimo Course at the Desert Mountain Club. (The tournament is also being played on the Cochise Course.) That put Hanna 1 stroke ahead of first-round leader Quade Cummins of Weatherford, Okla., and Jino Sohn, who plays at Arizona State.
Hanna, who is coming off a second-place finish at last weekend’s Watson Challenge at Milburn Country in Overland Park, will be in the final group for Friday’s third round with Cummins and Sohn.
