  • Hargreaves and Fletcher praised the Chiefs, noting Mahomes’ three Super Bowls and MVPs.

Let’s hope Fox Sports broadcasters Darren Fletcher and Owen Hargreaves didn’t leave Kansas City right after Colombia’s 1-0 win over Ghana on Friday night.

It rained for most of Independence Day, and temperatures were in the low 70s. That snapped a brutal hot streak that gripped Kansas City.

It ended not long after Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 in a Round of 32 World Cup match at Arrowhead Stadium (or Kansas City Stadium, if you’re a FIFA official).

Calling the game were Fletcher and Hargreaves, and they spent a decent amount of time talking about different Kansas City topics that had nothing to do with soccer. That included the Travis Kelce-Taylor Swift wedding as well as the hot and humid weather.

“I’ve not been to Kansas City very often,” Fletcher said, “but this is one of the rare places on Earth where even though it gets dark, it doesn’t get any colder…”

Hargreaves complimented Arrowhead: “It looks amazing. Brilliant stadium. With all the yellow shirts in it, it looks fabulous.”

But Fletcher added: “It’s so hot.”

Hargreaves may not have known about the Chiefs’ Wild Card win over the Dolphins in 2024 when a howling wind made the negative-4 degree temperature feel all the worse.

But he expected that winters in KC can be brutal.

“I’m not sure I’d want to be here in the winter for an NFL game,” Hargreaves said.

“People watching this might be thinking, ‘Don’t you moan.’ If you go watch the Chiefs in December, you’ll have an entirely different experience,” Fletcher noted.

Then came some praise for the Chiefs dynasty.

“I’ll tell you what, they’re doing all right,” Hargreaves said. “Three Super Bowls for (Patrick) Mahomes? Three MVPs. Seems to be doing all right in the cold. Andy Reid, what a job he’s done.”

Fletcher chimed in: “He’s certainly in the wedding. In fact, both of them are.”

The announcers previously noted in the broadcast that cameras wouldn’t catch any shot of Chiefs players because of the Swift-Kelce nuptials. And they praised Kansas City as a sports town, noting that four teams (England, Argentina, Holland and Algeria) made a World Cup base camp here.

The conversation included the Royals, who are in last place in the American League Central.

“I went to see the baseball last night across the parking lot,” Fletcher said. “The Kansas City Royals against the Tampa Bay Rays. It wasn’t a good night for the team from Kansas City, I can tell you. There were fountains inside the stadium. It was that warm; I almost went to go in them.”

Darren Fletcher: "One thing you shouldn't see here tonight are any Kansas City Chiefs players, because they should be at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding. If you've not got the invitation, you won't dare show your face here, I'm sure." #WorldCup
