FIFA World Cup

Two of these four teams will be coming to KC for a World Cup quarterfinal match

We won’t know until Tuesday which two teams will be coming to play in the biggest match in Kansas City during this World Cup.

But we know there won’t be a rematch at Kansas City Stadium (née Arrowhead).

There was a chance Algeria could face Argentina again in the quarterfinal here after they played in the group stage. But Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 in a Round of 32 match Thursday night.

Algeria, which had its base camp in Lawrence, conceded a goal in the 10th minute to the Swiss and another to start the second half.

Switzerland advanced to play Colombia, which defeated Ghana 1-0 on Friday night in front of an electric Kansas City crowd that was on its side.

The winner of the Swiss-Colombia match will face the Argentina-Egypt victor at Arrowhead.

Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout Friday after the teams played to a 1-1 tie after 120 minutes in Arlington, Texas. It was the first time Egypt has won a knockout-round game in the World Cup.

“It’s history,” Egypt star Mohamed Salah told reporters afterward. “I told the boys before the game that this is the biggest stage you can play on. Enjoy it and don’t let the pressure get to you.”

Next up for Egypt is Lionel Messi and defending World Cup champion Argentina. The dream of a repeat was on thin ice Friday as Argentina narrowly defeated upstart Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in Miami. That match was tied 1-1 after regulation.

Messi scored his seventh goal of this World Cup and the 20th of his career for Argentina, which has its base camp in Kansas City.

That match was held before the game in Kansas City, and each time Cape Verde scored, there were cheers from the Colombia supporters at Arrowhead Stadium. The South American rivals may just end up facing each other in a week.

The Egypt-Argentina match is Tuesday morning in Atlanta and the Colombia-Switzerland game follows in Vancouver.
