The ‘Blue Wave’ is coming. When will Curaçao fans touchdown in KC?

The Blue Wave is about to arrive in Kansas City.

In a news release Wednesday, Kansas City Public Information Officer Jackson Overstreet said three charter flights full of Curaçao fans will begin to arrive at Kansas City International Airport on Thursday.

The flights will touch down just days before the team’s 7 p.m. Saturday match against Ecuador at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which was renamed Kansas City Stadium for the worldwide event.

The game is also set to host royalty; King Willem-Alexander and Queen Màxima of the Netherlands plan to attend the match.

The small Caribbean nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, home to around 156,000 people, made history as the smallest nation to qualify and compete in the World Cup.

The team lost 7-1 in its first World Cup match against Germany Sunday. Midfielder Livana Comenencia scored the team’s first World Cup goal.

Curaçao’s next opponent, Ecuador, faced a similar loss, falling short to Cote D’Ivoire in its first World Cup match.

The first of three Curaçao charter flights is slated to arrive at MCI around 1:15 p.m., Overstreet said.
