How to watch Argentina vs. Algeria, FIFA World Cup game: Time, TV, betting odds
As important soccer events go, nothing in Arrowhead Stadium’s history can top the magnitude of what’s about to happen: The first of four FIFA World Cup group stage matches with defending champion Argentina meeting Algeria on Tuesday, followed by a pair of knockout round games.
But Kansas City tried early on to establish an international flavor at Arrowhead. The first major soccer event at the stadium pitted a U.S. team against Russians.
On Aug. 24, 1973, a year after Arrowhead opened, the North American Soccer League All-Stars took on Torpedo Moscow, one of the nation’s top clubs. The Russian team won 3-1 before 6,832 in the 78,000-seat stadium.
A report in the Kansas City Times noted that many of the KC-based fans were first- or second-generation Americans whose love for soccer was passed down by parents. It would take nearly three decades before Kansas City hosted another international game.
For Kansas City’s first World Cup game, an international broadcast audience will be measured in tens of millions and Arrowhead is expected to be filled. A long way from 1973.
