England soccer team to stay at Johnson County hotel during World Cup, per report

Although England won’t play a game in Kansas City during the 2026 World Cup, the team reportedly will work and spend downtime here.

England has asked FIFA, the world’s soccer governing body, to set up its training center at Swope Park. That’s where the Three Lions, the nickname given to the English national soccer team, will work when not playing its matches in Dallas, New York and Boston.

And we seem to know where the team will rest, too.

A story from the Daily Mail in the United Kingdom reported England has booked rooms at The Inn at Meadowbrook in Prairie Village. The hotel’s website shows no rooms available for more than a month starting on June 10.

Here is a description of The Inn at Meadowbrook from its website: “What was once the Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club has been transformed into Meadowbrook Park. This 136-acre property is enjoying a renewal for families, visitors, and the surrounding community. The Meadowbrook plan preserves mature trees and blends green space throughout the neighborhood with courtyards and parkettes. Maintenance-provided residential neighborhoods are a mix of single-family homes, twin villa homes, luxury apartments, and a senior living complex.”

Meadowbrook boasts having rooms with lake views, balconies and walk-out patios. There are 54 rooms

The Daily Mail reported England decided to select one city as a base camp rather than move from city to city.

“England will bring their own chefs,” the Daily Mail reported, “but in normal circumstances guests can head to American restaurant Verbena, which offers a number of tasty-looking, calorific desserts including fried apple pie, a banana croissant and bread pudding with rum caramel and a malted white chocolate mousse with candied pumpkin seed crumble, pumpkin bread crouton and pomegranate.”

Verbena is located at the inn.

Messages for the Football Association in England and Meadowbrook have not been returned.

The Netherlands, Argentina and Algeria are expected to set up base camps in Kansas City and Lawrence. Each of those sites has a hotel connected to the training location.
