UMKC snaps five-game losing streak by beating Chicago State
It had been some time since UMKC’s men’s basketball team celebrated a victory. But the Kangaroos finally got the opportunity on Saturday.
UMKC ended its five-game losing streak with a 78-64 victory over Chicago State at Municipal Auditorium.
LaVell Boyd scored 22 points for the Kangaroos, 9-13 overall and 2-5 in the Western Athletic Conference. Boyd made five three-pointers and was eight of 14 from the field.
Boyd opened the second half with a three-pointer, sparking a 19-9 run that stretched UMKC’s five-point halftime lead to 59-45 with 10 minutes left. The Kangaroos had a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Kyle Steward added 12 points and a career-best 11 rebounds, and Grant Leach made four threes and scored a career-high 12 points for UMKC. The Kangaroos made 51 percent of their shots in the game.
Martez Harrison entered the game third in the WAC in scoring at 15.7 points per game, but he scored only five points against the Cougars. Harrison did have seven assists in the game.
Fred Sims Jr. scored 26 points for Chicago State, 4-20 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
