UMKC Kangaroos need rally to get by Rockhurst 71-60

Martez Harrison scored 16 points and dished out five assists as UMKC beat Rockhurst 71-60 on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium.

LaVell Boyd added 14 points and four rebounds for the Kangaroos, who improved to 7-4 on the season. UMKC is 6-0 at home.

Dashawn King had 11 points with three assists and five rebounds and Darius Austin had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals for UMKC.

The Kangaroos, though, had to fight to earn this victory.

Rockhurst, a Division II school, surged to a 20-7 lead midway through the first half and had a 34-25 advantage at the break.

UMKC was down by 15, 39-25, early in the second half and trailed 43-41 midway when Austin and Aleer Leek combined for three three-pointers that put the Kangaroos on top, 50-45 with 8:23 to play.

King dunked and then hit two free throws that extended UMKC’s lead to 69-56 with 29 seconds left.

Malachi Nix and Austin Levan had 14 points apiece for the Hawks.

UMKC shot 48.1 percent for the game, compared to the Hawks’ 31.1 percent. Rockhurst made 25 of 26 free throws.

Rockhurst is 5-3 on the season.

It was the first time the two teams met since 1986.

UMKC plays at Louisville on Tuesday. It will be the Kangaroos’ fourth game this season against a team from a Power 5 conference.

Rockhurst next plays at Emporia State on Dec. 31.

UMKC women top Bethany

The UMKC women beat Bethany 64-51 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Aries Washington, who played in high school at North Kansas City, finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Kangaroos. Kiana Law added 20 points and eight rebounds for UMKC.
