Kansas City Roos fall in overtime at home to Cal State Bakersfield

The Kansas City Roos lost at home for the first time all season on Thursday night.

The Roos were beaten 74-64 in overtime by California State Bakersfield at Swinney Center.

KC had been 6-1 at Swinney. With the loss, though, the Roos dropped below .500 overall at 9-10, and in WAC play at 2-2. It was also the Roos’ third straight defeat overall.

The Roadrunners, meanwhile, bumped their record up to 8-10, 2-1.

Jordan Giles led KC with 19 points. Giles scored 11 (11 of 13) of those points at the free-throw line. Brandon McKissic also scored in double figures with his 15 points for KC, and Josiah Allick added 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Justin Edler-Davis threw in a game-high 25 points for Cal State Bakersfield. The Roos could not contain Edler-Davis in the overtime: He scored 13 of the Roadrunners’ 18 points in the OT, including three three-pointers.

The Roadrunners seemed to find Swinney Center to their liking: Cal State Bakersfield made its first nine shots from the field, including three three-pointers, in building an early double-digit lead in the first half. The Roos battled back to make it close before halftime at 33-26. KC then seemed the better team in the second half, grabbing its first the lead of the game at 34-33 on a McKissic layup at the 16:41 mark in the game.

The Roos held a slim lead for most of the rest of the second half but could not put the Roadrunners away.

Kansas City shot 35.2 percent from the field for the game to the Cal State Bakersfield’s 40 percent and was outrebounded 45-35.

Kansas City is back in action on Saturday night at Swinney Center at 7 p.m. against Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon won at Chicago State 78-64 on Thursday and improved to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in the WAC.
