UMKC loses by a pair of free throws

UMKC rallied late and almost came through with it’s first conference victory of the season.

But two free throws by Jordan Hill with 3 seconds left gave Seattle a 77-75 victory over the Kangaroos.

UMKC trailed 75-69 with 92 seconds left in the game after a three-pointer by Hill. But UMKC’s Jordan Giles made a three-pointer 12 seconds later. Then the Kangaroos’ Brandon McKissic came up with a steal and dished to Xavier Bishop for a score that reduced UMKC’s deficit to 1 point with 49 seconds left.

After Hill turned it over, his second in two possessions, Scott Ulaneo fouled Giles with 11 seconds left, and Giles made 1 of 2 free throws, tying it at 75-75 before Hill atoned for the turnovers by sinking the winning free throws. UMKC’s Broderick Robinson missed a three-point attempt as time expired.

UMKC dropped to 5-14 on the season and 0-3 in the WAC. Seattle, meanwhile, improved to 13-7 and 2-1.

Giles led UMKC with 21 points, while Bishop had 14 and Isaiah Ross 12. Both Giles and Ross came off the bench for the Kangaroos, who got 45 points overall from the bench.

Matej Kavas scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds for Seattle, which had 23 turnovers to UMKC’s 10. Seattle outrebounded UMKC 42-23.

Despite seven turnovers, Hill scored 15 points. He made 9 of 10 free throws.

UMKC is set to play host to California State Bakersfield on Thursday night at Municipal Auditorium.
