UMKC basketball routs William Jewell 93-71

Perhaps it was fitting that on “Kansas City Day” at Municipal Auditorium, nearly everything went UMKC’s way Saturday in a 93-71 victory over William Jewell.

Five players scored in double figures and the Roos shot 56 percent from the field (37-for-66) to snap a two-game losing streak.

Senior guard LaVell Boyd scored a team-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists for the Roos (7-4). Kyle Steward added 14 points, Xavier Bishop had 13, Jordan Giles scored a career-high 12 and Aleer Leek posted 10.

UMKC outscored William Jewell in the paint 54-16 and out-rebounded the Cardinals 46-26.

“I’m proud of our guys,” UMKC coach Kareem Richardson said. “It’s really important to have the rebounding edge and we had another game with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.”

Patrick Whelan led all scorers with 24 points for William Jewell (3-6), an NCAA Division II team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Matt Lassen made six three-pointers and added 20 points.

UMKC plays host to Omaha at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.

▪ Omaha 80, UMKC women 57: Former Blue Springs South standout Remy Davenport scored a game-high 21 points and the visiting Mavericks (5-5) never trailed in routing the Roos (5-4) at Municipal Auditorium.

Junior forward Kiana Law scored a team-high 12 points on 5-for-16 shooting for UMKC, which shot just 31.8 percent from the field.

UMKC will not play again until Dec. 19 against Southern Illinois in the Roo Holiday Classic at Swinney Recreation Center.
